This is how it is done ladies and gentlemen. The classic 90s Subaru, with a drivetrain that we should have had the whole time. This particular Legacy wagon has been aided by the well-known method of JDM parts, and the result is stunning. Come see, the inaugural edition of RADICAL IMPORTS , where I find and show the world the epic import builds for sale to the world!
Next time I sell a car, I’m going to take a picture here, always seem to bring a higher price! LOLOLOLOL.
This is a 1997 Subaru Legacy GT wagon . It is freshly repainted red, contains a myriad of new parts, and is more JDM than it ever was before, even before it got off the sushi-boat. It is advertised as having 65,000 miles, a super low mile example, if true for a Subaru, and we all know how most ‘Subys are typically driven... straight into their grave!
What is special is that this wagon has been fortunate to have it’s stock, anemic, and boring NA flat four forcibly gutted and replaced with a JDM sourced WRX EJ207 ! This brings the power output from a stock 165hp to something closer to 300hp - based on the WRX engine and modifications listed.
‘I quite like the red on this wagon’, said, Me - a non-red enthusiast.
The WRX engine is backed up by another gem in the Version 6 Type RA transmission . This is another 5-speed, like the Legacy was stock, but the RA is stronger, and equipped with DCCD (center differential). At the rear is the Version 6 RA R160 LSD . Both of these drivetrain parts are, of course, JDM ONLY!!!
Does it get better than this?! Green hood prop rods, gold strut hats, red intakes... keep talking dirty to me.
Inside this Suby you get some JDM Legacy bits from 2004 with surfaces upholstered in Alcantara. There is a Nardi steering wheel, but you get the original OEM thrown in as well. The black updated Legacy seats appear to fit well even though they’re from a newer chassis, apparently these cars didn’t change much between the two generations.
The dash was treated to the JDM gauge cluster with the DCCD control - which I believe is the white button panel near the turn signal stock in the photograph. I am unable to tell if the JDM gauges contain the speedo in KPH... please no, we use MPH here, I wonder if the original odometer was swapped in... doesn’t look like it to me!
Nardi is always a great option as it has that OEM look with a better feel.
The parts list contained within the ad is absolutely delicious. I could eat this list with a shovel and ask for thirds. It is the perfect Subaru Legacy wagon. I honestly don’t know what else could have been done better. Maybe the red paint? I’m not a big red fan, although I like this particular car, I do believe a stereotypical world rally blue could have suited it better. Then again, a red Subaru is a rare color for anything they produce for an enthusiast.
What does all this JDM-goodness cost you might wonder. It would cost a large fist full of dollar bills to build this long roof. Think about it all - engine swap, drivetrain swap, interior swap, sourcing all the rare parts, and lastly getting it smog legal for those of us in California. The time alone can almost justify a super high price... how does $20,995 sound to you?!
The wheels aren’t bad either, red on gold/bronze is always a good combo!

Ugh, $20k is a LOT. But then, I see a 90's Subaru and assume it’s garbage because all of the ones around here are one flat tire away from the scrapyard. And like you said, it would be hard to find a better Subaru as far as this build is concerned.
I think this would sell in two beats of a flat-four -burble for $15k.

Yes, I agree, but if you REALLY wanted to have one, this would be cheaper and easier than building it.

Always start high. I bet they’d take 15k in a month or two. That isn’t an offending offer.

Do it and let me know. I want to take my M5 there for a picture, but finding the time... took pictures from Treasure Island looking at the skyline years ago, wish I still had them.

This is a rad car but not $20k rad. I really like that era legacy chassis and body. Great visibility, and it is actually a fairly small car. A 2.5 turbo swap would make it a real ripper.

It could be done cheaper. I don’t think it would be much cheaper if done at home. I’d bet for $12,000 it could be done it a similar parts list... the painting though... always kills a build.

That true it would probably cost more than that to build that, and I’m sure the time invested is insane.

There are a lot of people around this time of year, hard to get a clear spot to take a picture, maybe on a Tuesday morning early. I usually have less activities in the colder months so maybe a clear cold morning with my big Pentax camera. But Diamond Tire Center is swapping my rims tomorrow so it will be cool to see this car with the Type S waffles on it.

Wow that’s a lot. I had a 99 legacy g t wagon. Loved that car but definitely would have been a lot more fun with a wrx engine in it. If I found a clean body I would probably buy it and swap everything in my wrx to it in a heartbeat

There are actually a few ways in there but since I go to Cronkhite I go the way right by the tunnel entrance to over there and then you just turn right on Bunker rd. and it curves around under there and goes back under the way you came from. I think that is why people don’t think about it as the way. The Conzelman rd. way seems to be closed and just for government use when I see it today after renovations. There is also East rd. if you come from in Sausalito.

It’s been 80 in the city even at times this summer. I was by the water working at Chase Area the other day and it was in the 80s. That point of Sausalito could be the coolest spot most of the time though.

Yeah that is probably the spot, I doubt the parking lot back further back can get that perspective. Some car rally starts and high end sales photos have been in this spot. Along there is a little dirt parking area, until further under the bridge. The Conzelman route comes down to there but it has been off limits. Oh they made it bikes only I think. Oh you can see the pier in the background, so it is from the lot by the discovery museum.

Unique to be sure! Seats are more bolstered than the seats in my 2019 STI Limited! Would look at the underside to see how much of the structure is rusted out if I was really interested.

Good idea. The car I owned was from Wisconsin. It had some rust on the drivers door but very light rust underneath. I’m guessing this one is probably in good shape - always good to check!

$20K?
Flights to NZ from LA = ~$1000
Legacy GT Turbo’s in NZ = ~$5000 (some as low as $3k if you’re in to sketchy)
cost of awesome
fun time holiday in NZ driving your new-old legacy turbo for a couple of weeks = as low as $2000
That up to ~ $12000 in spare money to ship the car back to the states and get it legal.

hmm that means you’re limited to 92-94 models.. which is good news cause the GT/B-spec was available in 94.
You’re probably looking at around $10kNZD for a nice one of those though.
